The here found aor. πατά-σαι may also be seen in καπατάς καθορῶν. παρὰ Εὔκλῳ H. (cod. κάπατας καθαρόν... Εὑηλῶν), if contracted from *πατάσας (Hoffmann Dial. 1, 118); diff. Bechtel Lex. 270 (with M. Schmidt): from pres. *πάτᾱμι. The form ἀνεπάταξεν ἐξ ὕπνου ἀνέβλεψεν, which stands beside it, one is prepared to consider as, `elevate (the eyes)' and to connect with πατάσσω; here further καπατᾶ κατακόψεις. Πάφιοι H., prob. with Hoffmann l.c. from *πατά-ω `beat' (in πάτα-γος, πατά-σσω). Is also πατά-σαι `glance', and finally also πα-πτ-αίνω semantiscally to be connected? Or the last to πέτομαι from fluttering around of the look? - The word can hardly be IE.

    Etymology: As old yot-present σκέπτομαι stands with metathesis (Schwyzer 268) for *σπέκ-ι̯ομαι, which is identical with Lat. speciō, Av. spasyeiti and (except for anl. s-) with Skt. páśyati `see'. The aor. σκέψασθαι too can in the same way be identified with Lat. spexī ; in both cases we have however to do with innovations against the suppletive Skt. ádarśam, 3. pl. ádr̥śan (s. δέρκομαι). Through the iterative-intensive σκοπέω, - έομαι a new opposition was created in Greek to σκέψασθαι etc. in the same way as Skt. pásyati: ádarśam, ὁράω: εἶδον. -- Semant. and phonetic identity is also found in σκοπός and Skt. spaśa- `spy', which is enlarged from spaś- (s. below; Wackernagel-Debrunner II: 2, 90); to this further OWNo. spār `predicting' from PGm. * spaha- (IE *spóḱo-). Thus σκοπή agrees, but for the accent, with OWNo. spā f. `prophesy' from PGm. * spahō (IE *spóḱā).     Etymology: As basis of θέα etc. we can assume *θᾱϜα; (the -α of Att. θέα from θεάομαι? s. Schwyzer 188 w. n. 2). From *θά̄Ϝᾱ, *θήϜη, θέα (with shortening η \> ε; Schwyzer 349) we can explain θᾱ(Ϝ)έομαι, θη(Ϝ)έομαι (with αο \> εο; Schwyzer 242f.), θεάομαι without difficulty as denominatives. Or it is an iterative-intensive deverbative (Schwyzer 720) with θέη, θέα as back-formations; this seems indicated by the chronology. Another primary noun is prob. θῆβος (= θῆϜος) θαῦμα with θήγεια (= θήϜεια) θαυμαστά, ψευδῆ and θηταλά (= θηϜαλά) θαυμαστά, ψεύδεσιν ὅμοια H. - No cognates; wrong combinations in Bq, 832.     ① to touch by feeling and handling, touch, handle, τινά or τὶ someone or someth. (Gen 27:12; Judg 16:26 al.) ψηλαφήσατέ με Lk 24:39; ISm 3:2. Cp. 1J 1:1. λίθον Hs 9, 6, 3. In οὐ προσεληλύθατε ψηλαφωμένῳ Hb 12:18, even if the v.l. ὄρει is dropped, the reference is to Mt. Sinai, where God gave a self-revelation according to the OT with manifestations that could be felt or touched, were tangible (ESelwyn, On ψηλ. in Hb 12:18: JTS 12, 1911, 133f).—In imagery (Polyb. 8, 18, 4) πάντα τόπον ἐψηλαφήσαμεν we have touched upon every subject 1 Cl 62:2.

Also ἀκολουθεῖν (q.v. 2; also s. Gulin s.v. μιμητής a) Mt 10:38; Mk 8:34. ἀπέρχεσθαι Mk 1:20; J 12:19. πορεύεσθαι ὀπ. τινός Lk 21:8. The two latter verbs combine w. ὀπίσω τινός in our lit. in another connection: ἀπέρχεσθαι ὀπ. σαρκὸς ἑτέρας go after strange/alien flesh i.e. human beings in Sodom were lusting after beings of a different order, viz. angels (according to En 12:4 al., the reverse took place when angels visited earthly women) Jd 7. The parallel pass. 2 Pt 2:10, on the other hand, has ὀπ. σαρκὸς ἐν ἐπιθυμίᾳ μιασμοῦ πορεύεσθαι, where the σάρξ seems rather to be the power of the defiling desire, to which (σάρξ) the sinners have pledged allegiance.
